Dynamic Architecture

The photos above are considered dynamic because rather than containing horizontal and vertical lines, they are composed of various angled lines. In the first landscape picture, elements such as contrast and rhythm emphasize the string of lights running across the sky at an angle, demonstrating dynamic composition. In the second photo, the contrast between the shadows and highlights and the emphasis of the dark rusty shovel against the white door outline the tools, creating another dynamic angle.

The portrait above was set up so that their eyes, heads, and shoulders were all at different levels thus achieving dynamic composition and also displaying the principles of unity and variety because of their differing heights and physical position. The architectural  picture shown above is an example of dynamic composition due to the sharp slanted angles in crevice of the wall. Additionally this picture demonstrates the elements of line and value.

Static Architecture

The four photos above are considered static because they consist of straight horizontal/vertical lines and 90 degree angles. For example, the white fence in the landscape picture consists of perfectly vertical lines that are emphasized by the contrasting colors of the roses and leaves covering it. The still life photo created is static because of the upright and parallel placement of all the bottles on the stove. The photo is also characterized by the elements of value and the rhythm of the bottles.

The portrait above is a good display of static composition because the two subjects’ eyes, heads, and shoulders are all on the same plane. The photo is also characterized by rhythm and harmony because of their similar stances and expressions. The last photo pictured displays static composition because the shape and emphasis created by the soft background draws the eyes attention to the light bulbs, which are hanging at the same level from parallel cords.
